Internship Requirements


Each province in Canada requires foreign educated pharmacists to complete an internship as part of the licensure process.  Please refer to the provincial website for specific details and updates.

Alberta
500 hours of practical training (internship) under the supervision of a registered pharmacist and a passing grade on an internship examination is required for licensure.

By permission, internship may be taken prior to the PEBC Qualifying Exam.

British Columbia (BC)
160 hours of post-graduate practical internship training must be completed in 4 consecutive weeks at the same site. This requirement is waived where a candidate has practiced for 1000 hours in Canada or the U.S. within the last three years.

Manitoba
360 hours of practise within a 9-15 week period following the final year of study and a satisfactory report from the preceptor are required for licensure.

Foreign trained grads must complete the PEBC Qualifying exam prior to commencement of internship.

New Brunswick
The requirement to complete an internship period is determined by the Examinations and Credentials Committee. Evidence of practical training, length of service in a pharmacy or Continuing Education records from the pharmacists current licensing body will be evaluated.

Newfoundland and Labrador
An internship period of at least 32 weeks must be completed in Canada regardless of prior experience outside of Canada. The internship must be served in three different locations supervised by three different preceptors.

Nova Scotia
An internship period of 39 weeks, of which 8 weeks must be completed after graduation, is required. The internship must be structured in accordance with NAPRA's "Model Structured Practical Training Program", including a one week practice assessment. Structured Practical Training Program

Ontario
Internship with the Ontario College of Pharmacists is a minimum of 16 weeks of Structured Practical Training. Each applicant must find a pharmacist is willing to act as a preceptor.  Once a preceptor has been identified, the applicant must register as an intern with the College.

Prince Edward Island

Saskatchewan

The Saskatchewan Pharmaceutical Association will assign each foreign educated pharmacist to an independent assessor for a 2 week assessment period. The length of the required internship period will be determined by the independent assessor based on the competence of the applicant. The internship period must be completed under the immediate supervision of a pharmacist licensed and practicing in Saskatchewan.
