PEBC Qualifying Exam – Updated July 2003

On www.pebc.ca there is a long list of suggested reference material for the Qualifying Exam. After each exam WorldWide HealthStaff surveys candidates to identify the most useful references relative to the last exam. This does not necessarily mean that there will be as good a co-relation between these references and the next exam. Also, candidates will have different knowledge bases due to qualifications and experience hence references not mentioned may be useful.

This information is provided for reference by all pharmacists who are preparing for the Evaluating Exam and is based exclusively on reports from candidates who have written the exam. This report is a WorldWide HealthStaff report, not a PEBC sanctioned report

Details of your experience are requested to keep this file current.

References are graded as Excellent, Very Good, Good, Poor and are listed in order on the PEBC web site under The Evaluating Exam, Pharmaceutical References.

Candid comments from candidates:

“I spent time studying pharmaceutical chemistry eg pH, pKa etc. importance of certain catalysts and the resultant chemical reactions. The chemistry reactions in relation to human physiology eg renal eg competative excretary effects due to pH changes, metabolites etc. and liver function eg ratio of high extraction or low extraction of certain drugs.”

“ You need to work out what is standard deviation, variant, number needed to treat etc.”

“Some questions on radio isotops, chromotography. Few questions on anatomy such as name of cavity in the knee joint and questions on stem cells and name of cells that become platelets as well as questions on immunity.”

“There are some questions on the spending and budgetary base on business in Canada. I didn’t study this so used process of elimination.”

“The evaluation examination may appear difficult with the huge number of questions and the lengthy hours. You must not spend too much time on any one question as each one is one mark. I found about 70% of the questions were easy.”
